How long do Injectables last?

Injectable treatments are the most popular form of cosmetic treatment in use today. Botox injections alone account for almost 40% of all cosmetic procedures practiced in the US last year, and injectable treatments as a whole represent half the treatments performed. In addition, they have become five times more popular since 2000, and their popularity shows no signs of diminishing.

The main reasons for the popularity of these treatments is their noninvasive nature, requiring no surgery, no recovery time, and have virtually no risk of serious side effects. In addition, they provide significant, if moderate, improvement for facial wrinkles, meaning that they can make an important difference for men and women seeking to look younger.

However, one of the main questions about injectables is just how long do they last. In order to maintain the aesthetic improvement experienced by injectable treatments, it is necessary that patients return to their cosmetic surgeon for touch-up treatments on a regular basis. How frequently they need to have touch-ups done depends on the injectable.

Botox Cosmetic

Botox cosmetic is a highly dilute solution of botulin toxin type A that is injected into the muscles of your face, blocking the signals that cause them to habitually contract, the cause of many deep wrinkles, especially in the forehead area. Botox injections gradually wear off, and may need to be repeated about every 4 months.

Hyaluronic Acid-Based Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a natural fluid that is found in the skin, joints, and spinal column. Hyaluronic-acid based fillers like Restylane, Perlane, and Juvéderm, utilize a non-animal based form of the fluid as their base, which is formulated into a gel. This gel is injected into wrinkles, pushing them out from below and smoothing the skin. As natural compounds, these gels are gradually absorbed by the body, meaning that treatments must be repeated approximately every 6 months to maintain the aesthetic improvement.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a composite filler, made up of a suspension gel of methylcellulose, a common food thickener, and calcium hydroxyl-apatite microspheres. Radiesse provides equivalent, if not superior immediate improvement of wrinkles. However, the compound works very differently over the long term. As the methylcellulose is absorbed, the body fills in the voids around the microspheres with its own collagen. This leads to an improved duration for aesthetic treatment, lasting until the microspheres are absorbed. The manufacturer claims the results of Radiesse injections might last as long as 18 months.

Artefill

Artefill is a new variation on the same principle as used by Radiesse. While Radiesse’s microspheres are made of the natural compound calclium hydroxyl-apatite, a natural substance that is absorption-resistant, but is still absorbed by the body over time, Artefill uses polymethylmethacrylate microspheres. The theory is that these spheres will provide a permanent matrix for the body’s collagen and lead to a permanent treatment. As yet, there is no significant body of clinical data that would allow us to predict just how long this treatment might last.

Depending on the application, the short-term duration of injectable treatments can be seen as an advantage, as it allows for constant revision of your appearance, and can give the impression not that you are receiving cosmetic treatment, but that you are simply aging gracefully.
